REMOVING STAINS FROM FINE GARMENTS

With Valentine’s Day just a couple of weeks away, many people are already making plans to go out or stay in with those they love. Chocolates, jewelry, and festive clothing are being bought. Some men will pull out their nice shirts for the occasion… Of course, one way to ruin an evening is to spill wine or find a stain on your cashmere sweater, wool coat or party dress! So, with Valentine’s Day in mind, I have provided some tips for the care and keeping of your nice clothing just in case an unfortunate accident does occur.

  • Delicate garments needing cleaning from spills, stains and unsightly marks such as: wool, nylon, silk, satin, velvet, rayon, taffeta, cashmere, etc.
  • Fabric softeners and mild detergents that are environmentally friendly.

  • Use lukewarm or cold water on a clean towel to hand-wash a fresh stain.
  • Look for a mild, environmentally friendly detergent and keep a small bottle of it in your car for emergency spills.
  • Place a small amount of detergent in water and apply the mixture to the stain with a damp sponge.
  • Use mild soap instead of laundry detergent for beaded fabrics, silk and velvet.
  • DO NOT use detergents or cleaners containing chlorine bleach.
  • Avoid drying your clothing in the dryer. Rather, hang-dry if possible.
  • If you do use a machine dryer, use low temperature settings and remove from the dryer as soon as the clothing item is completely dry.
  • Look for environmentally friendly fabric softeners if you are drying nylon in a machine dryer (to reduce static cling).
  • Lay your clothing out to dry flat.
